La strada

La Strada (1954) is a tragic tale of a young woman, Gelsomina, played by Giulietta Masina, who is sold to a brutish strongman, Zampanò, played by Anthony Quinn, to be his wife and partner in his itinerant circus act. Despite her initial resistance and abuse at his hands, Gelsomina finds a kindred spirit in Il Matto, the circus fool, played by Richard Basehart, and contemplates leaving Zampanò for him. The film follows their complex and often tumultuous relationship, culminating in a devastating conclusion that leaves Gelsomina broken and Zampanò consumed by grief.
