He is accompanied by "the European", who represents the Marquis de Custine, a 19th-century French traveler, played by "the European" (Sergei Dreyden). The film extensively uses the fourth wall device, with the narrator and the companion interacting with other performers at times, while at other times they pass unnoticed.
