Ano natsu, ichiban shizukana umi

A young deaf garbage collector, Shigeru (Claude Maki), discovers a broken surfboard and becomes determined to learn how to surf. Encouraged by his deaf girlfriend, Takako (Hiroko Oshima), he persists against all odds, eventually entering a local surfing competition and winning a participation prize. Despite his growing passion for surfing, Shigeru's newfound hobby takes a tragic turn, leading to his disappearance at sea. The film's poignant portrayal of Shigeru and Takako's relationship, set against the backdrop of the ocean, ultimately leaves the audience with a sense of sadness and longing.
