The Marquis de la Chesnaye and his wife host a weekend gala, where complicated romantic and social entanglements between guests and servants lead to tragedy, all against the backdrop of a looming war. Jean Renoir stars as Octave, a wise and mournful host, alongside Marcel Dalio as Robert de la Chesnaye, the Marquis, and Nora Gregor as Christine de la Chesnaye, his troubled wife. The film satirizes the moral callousness of upper-class French society just before the start of World War II.
