In 1916, recently orphaned brothers Hussein and Theeb, the second and third sons of a Bedouin sheik, come from a family of pilgrim guides and are accustomed to a nomadic lifestyle. Their camp is visited by Edward, a British officer, and an Arab named Marji, who are accompanied by a mysterious stranger. Theeb, still a boy, has great difficulty bringing himself to slaughter a goat for the visitors, and is soon drawn into a treacherous journey with the group. As they travel, they are ambushed by raiders, and Theeb's brother is killed. Alone and injured, Theeb is taken in by a gravely injured mercenary, Hassan, who is one of the perpetrators of the ambush. Despite initial hostility, the two form an unlikely bond as they try to survive together and evade the Ottoman Empire.
