A disillusioned director, Viktor Taransky (Al Pacino), creates a virtual actress, Simone, to star in his films after his star, Nicola Anders, walks off the set. Taransky names Simone, a composite name from the computer program's title, Simulation One, and her performance becomes the highlight at the premiere, revitalizing Taransky's filmmaking career. As Simone's fame grows, Taransky struggles to keep her non-presence a secret, while also dealing with the consequences of his creation overshadowing him in the press and straining his relationship with his ex-wife, Elaine.
