In 1670s Northern Moravia, an altar boy discovers an old woman hiding communion bread and sparks a witch hunt led by inquisitor Boblig, who uses medieval torture methods to extract confessions. Kryštof Lautner, a priest, criticizes Boblig's methods, and one of the accused women, Zuzana, confesses under torture, leading to Lautner's downfall.
