After the death of his wife, a man, Early Landry (John Carroll Lynch), moves from Mississippi to a run-down Hollywood apartment, where he meets someone new, Freda Von Rhenburg (Matt Bomer), a transgender sex worker. They bond over their shared loneliness and past traumas, sparking a friendship and, eventually, a tentative romance.
