Jaime Escalante (Edward James Olmos) is a mathematics teacher at a Hispanic neighborhood school in East Los Angeles. Convinced that his students have potential, he adopts unconventional teaching methods to try and turn gang members and no-hopers into top algebra and calculus students. The film is based on Escalante's true story, in which he inspired 18 Latino students to pass Advanced Placement Calculus in 1982.
