Jacobo Koller, desperate to prove his life has added up to something, turns to Marta, an employee at his sock factory, to pretend to be his wife to impress his long-lost brother, Herman, who comes to visit him for the anniversary of their mother's death. Marta agrees, and they re-decorate and clean Jacobo's apartment, putting on a facade of a happy marriage. As Herman's visit progresses, Marta and Herman grow closer, potentially developing feelings for one another, while Jacobo remains cold and unemotional towards both. In the end, Jacobo wins a large sum of money at a casino and decides to give it to Marta as a present, but she disappears without explanation, leaving Jacobo alone once again.
