Real Women Have Curves

In East Los Angeles, 18-year-old Ana García (America Ferrera) struggles to balance her ambitions of going to college with her family's expectations, particularly those of her domineering mother Carmen (Lupe Ontiveros), who wants her to get married, have children, and oversee the family's textile factory. Ana's family and teacher Mr. Guzman (George López) encourage her to pursue her dreams, while her sister Estela (Ingrid Oliu) supports her, and she develops a secret relationship with a white fellow graduate. As Ana navigates her relationships and identity, she learns to call out her mother's emotionally abusive tendencies and finds confidence in her own body, ultimately leading to a life-changing decision that sets her on a path to independence.
