The Secret of Roan Inish

In the 1946 story told from Fiona's point of view, she is sent to live with her grandparents in an Irish fishing village, after the death of her mother, illness of her father, and her own frail health. Her grandfather tells tales about their family's history, including the evacuation from their generational home on the tiny island of Roan Inish during the Second World War. A local legend about an ancestor who married a Selkie - a seal who can turn into a human - is shared by a distant cousin, Tadhg, who tells Fiona that the selkie's blood remains in their family tree, and that she may have found her lost baby brother Jamie on the island.
