Toto le héros tells the life story of Thomas Van Hasebroeck, aka Toto, looking back on his ordinary, apparently uneventful life through a complex mosaic of flashbacks and fantasies about how events might have turned out differently. As Thomas is a very unreliable narrator, it's not always possible to tell the difference between embellished or manufactured memories and fantasies. Thomas firmly believes his life was "stolen" from him by Alfred Kant, whom he believes was switched with him as a baby, and he plots revenge against Alfred, but ultimately finds a more creative and surprising way to "take back" his life.
