In a martial arts tournament held once every generation between Earth and Outworld, defenders Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade are chosen by god Raiden to prevent Outworld from winning their tenth straight victory. Seeking revenge against Shang Tsung for killing his brother Chan and taking his soul, Liu Kang advances through the tournament alongside Johnny, who seeks to debunk media claims that his martial arts skills are faked, and Sonya, whose partner was murdered by crime boss Kano.
