Astronaut Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) crash-lands on a planet inhabited by intelligent apes, who treat humans as slaves. He meets a female chimpanzee named Ari, played by Helena Bonham Carter, who helps him start a rebellion against the ape regime led by Ruthless General Thade, played by Tim Roth, and eventually returns to Earth, only to find that it has been taken over by the apes.
