Julia Jarmond (Kristin Scott Thomas), a French-American journalist, researches the Vel' d'Hiver Roundup of Jews in 1942, where her husband's father lived in the apartment that belonged to Sarah Starzynski (Mélusine Mayance), a 10-year-old girl who was forced to hide her younger brother in a closet. Sixty years later, Julia discovers a well-kept secret about her own in-laws, and through Sarah's file, learns about the trauma and guilt experienced by Sarah and her family after the war.
