Maria, a talented dresser, aspires to perform in the legitimate theatre, but is forbidden due to the law prohibiting theatres from employing actresses. She appears in productions at a local tavern under a pseudonym and gains popularity, attracting the attention of Sir Charles Sedley, who offers his patronage. Eventually, she is presented to King Charles II, who subsequently bans men from playing female roles, a decision that affects Ned Kynaston, her dresser and a leading actor, particularly famous for his portrayal of female characters. Maria becomes a theatrical star with Ned's help, as they coach each other to regain a theatrical career in male and female roles.
