In the present-day India, Madhu, a woman played by Amyra Dastur, is convinced that she and her colleague Ashwin, played by Dhanush, were lovers in their past lives and have been brought together by fate. As Madhu narrates her story, which takes the audience back to 1960s Burma, where she was known as Samudra, a Tamil worker who falls in love with a man named Murugappa alias Munaruna, who is also Ashwin's character. The story spans multiple reincarnations, including Madhu's third birth as Kalyani, a Brahmin girl who falls in love with a goon named Kaali.
