In 1932, a cop is shot and killed in Chicago during Prohibition, and Frank Wiecek, a small-time crook, is wrongly convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. Eleven years later, reporter P.J. 'Jim' McNeal (James Stewart) is assigned to look into the case by Wiecek's mother, who offers a $5,000 reward for information that might prove Wiecek's innocence. As McNeal delves deeper, he begins to suspect that Wiecek may be innocent, but he faces resistance from the police and the state's attorney's office, who are unwilling to be proven wrong. The case is eventually solved when McNeal discovers enlarged photographs showing the date on a newspaper headline that proves a key witness lied, confirming Wiecek's innocence.
