Deanna Durbin stars as Anne Terry, a young hat check girl who poses as a fiancée for a dying millionaire's son. Charles Laughton plays Jonathan Reynolds, the ailing patriarch, who is overjoyed by the ruse but eventually becomes enamored with Anne's talent and kindness. Robert Cummings plays Johnny Reynolds Jr., the young man's son, who is initially hesitant to break the news to his father.
