Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Tom Hanks), a former Confederate officer turned newspaper reader, agrees to help rescue a young girl named Johanna Leonberger, who was kidnapped and adopted by the Kiowa tribe. Along the way, Kidd learns that Johanna's adoptive family was killed, making her an orphan twice-over. As they face various dangers on their journey, Kidd and Johanna form a bond, and he becomes determined to return her to her last remaining family in Castroville.
