In 1961, literary agent Diarmuid Russell persuades financially strapped author P.L. Travers to travel to Los Angeles and meet with Walt Disney, who has pursued the film rights to her Mary Poppins stories for 20 years after having promised his daughters a live-action adaptation. The story follows their two weeks of meetings, during which Disney attempts to obtain the film rights to her novels while Travers shares flashbacks from her difficult childhood in rural Queensland, Australia.
