Hortense Cumberbatch (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), a successful black optometrist in London, seeks to trace her family history after her adoptive mother's death, leading her to discover her birth mother Cynthia Purley (Brenda Blethyn), a working-class white woman living in near-poverty. Cynthia's strained relationship with her daughter Roxanne (Claire Rushbrook) and brother Maurice (Timothy Spall) is revealed as they anticipate celebrating Roxanne's 21st birthday, prompting an emotional breakdown and eventual bonding between Cynthia and Hortense.
