Nine-year-old Evelyn Doyle and her two brothers, Maurice and Dermot, are left motherless when their mother leaves their drunkard father Desmond Doyle after losing his job. The Catholic Church and Irish courts decide to put the children in Church-run orphanages. Desmond's efforts to regain custody of his children are aided by Bernadette, a local bartender and chemist, who helps him get regular jobs and eventually gets him help from a solicitor, Nick Barron, and a lawyer, Michael Beattie, who argues Desmond's case before the Supreme Court.
