In 1593 London, William Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) is a struggling playwright facing writer's block and debt to moneylender Fennyman. Viola de Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow), a noblewoman disguising herself as "Thomas Kent," auditions for a role in his play "Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter." After Shakespeare discovers her true identity, they fall into forbidden love, transforming his comedy into tragedy.
