In 1971, Shūji Terayama burst onto the cinematic scene with "Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets", a psychedelic odyssey through Japan's counterculture movement of the 1970s. This experimental film follows an unnamed protagonist as he navigates the streets of Tokyo, grappling with existential angst and familial dysfunction amidst a kaleidoscope of avant-garde set pieces, street interviews, and musical interludes. As the son of a troubled family, our protagonist embodies the disillusionment and alienation of youth in search of identity, expression, and connection in a world torn apart by social upheaval.
