Brie Larson plays Grace Howard, a compassionate young supervisor at a foster care facility, where she helps at-risk teens. When a new charge, Jayden Cole, arrives and dredges up memories of her own troubled past, Grace's tough exterior begins eroding. The film explores themes of child abuse, parent-child relationship, and social work, as Grace navigates her complicated emotions and professional relationships amidst the challenges of working with troubled teenagers, including Marcus, a resident who struggles with leaving the facility.
