In 1914, Marcel Proust hired Eva Mattes as his attendant Céleste Albaret, who waited on him from 9 AM to 3 PM while he slept, only entering his room when he rang for her. As his muse, she tells stories of her childhood to stir his remembrance, and listens appalled to his descriptions of the underside of Paris. Jürgen Arndt plays Marcel Proust, the French writer who lay in bed from 1912 to 1922, racing time to finish his work before death.
