True-crime writer Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) moves his family into a new home in Chatsford, Pennsylvania, where a horrific crime took place, and discovers a box of 8mm "snuff" films that hint at the presence of a supernatural force. As Ellison delves deeper into the mystery, his family becomes increasingly endangered, and he must confront the possibility that living in the house may be fatal.
