Paul Newman plays Reggie "Reg" Dunlop, the coach of the struggling minor league hockey team The Charlestown Chiefs in a small Pennsylvania town hit hard by unemployment. The management signs the Hanson Brothers to boost attendance, unleashing three hard-charging players who take the whole team on a bloodthirsty winning streak right to the championship final, boosting crowds but also problems, as the owner makes more money if she folds the team as a tax write-off.
