At the end of World War II, Captain Joseph Piller, a Dutch Jew who worked for the Canadian military administration in post-war Netherlands, discovers that his former resistance adversary Han van Meegeren has been selling stolen art to the Nazis, including a Johannes Vermeer painting. As Piller interrogates Van Meegeren, he uncovers a complex web of deceit and forgery, forcing him to confront the darker side of human nature and make an impossible choice between loyalty and justice. With the help of a portrait that eerily resembles his lover's face, Piller finally pieces together the truth about Van Meegeren's past and must decide whether to defend his former enemy or see him brought to justice.
