A Simple Twist of Fate

Steve Martin stars as Michael McCann, a man who is thrown over by his wife and becomes a misanthrope after she divorces him, spending all his spare money on collectible gold coins. His life changes when an affluent family's son, John Newland (Gabriel Byrne), breaks into his house and steals the gold, but then Michael discovers a mysterious young woman has died in the snow outside his house, leaving behind her small daughter, Mathilda (Alana Austin, Alyssa Austin, Alaina & Callie Mobley, Victoria & Elizabeth Evans). A kind-hearted local shopkeeper, April Simon (Catherine O'Hara), helps raise the child with Michael's help, transforming him and eventually leading to a trial where John tries to gain custody of Mathilda.
