Boris Yellnikoff (Larry David), a cynical and misanthropic chess teacher, is a divorced professor who avoids people he can't match intellectually. He's unexpectedly drawn into a romantic entanglement with Melody (Evan Rachel Wood), a naive 21-year-old runaway from Mississippi. When Melody's uptight parents arrive in New York to rescue her, they're quickly swept up in their own unexpected romantic misadventures. As everyone navigates love and relationships, Boris ultimately discovers that finding joy requires embracing the value of "whatever works."
