The story follows three characters, Paul Rivers (Sean Penn), Cristina Peck (Naomi Watts), and Jack Jordan (Benicio del Toro), after a hit-and-run accident that brings them together. Christina Peck is a grieving mother whose husband and children are killed in the accident, while Paul is a critically ill mathematician who receives a heart transplant from her late husband's donor. As the story unfolds, their paths continue to intersect as they grapple with their respective losses, faith, and the consequences of their actions.
