In 1830s France, pianist/composer Frédéric Chopin is pursued romantically by George Sand, a determined and individualistic woman who wears men's clothing. The two meet at a French country house party hosted by the Duchess d'Antan, where they engage in witty repartee and passionate declarations of love. As their relationship deepens, Chopin's health problems worsen, but Sand insists on bolstering his resolve with her strength. With the help of George Sand's children and her own determination, Chopin finds a new sense of vitality, and the two depart for convalescence in Mallorca, free from the rivalries and jealousies of Parisian artistic circles.
