In this wacky military spoof, Jack Lemmon plays a terminally bored Army private waging a war of wits as he tries to throw a party under the nose of his obnoxious commanding officer. A mastermind of mischief and mayhem, Hogan must outsmart his nemesis, Capt. Paul Lock, while navigating the complexities of romance with beautiful Lt. Betty Bixby. As the night of the "Mad Ball" approaches, Hogan's plans become more elaborate and hilarious, culminating in a night that will be remembered by all - if he can just stay one step ahead of Lock.
