Dr. John Dolittle's ability to talk to animals makes him famous as he travels the world performing his skills. Returning home from France, he grounds his eldest daughter Charisse for doing poorly in school and persuades a circus bear named Archie to accompany him to a forest where an endangered female Pacific western bear is involved with a male Kodiak bear named Sonny. To populate the forest, Dolittle enlists the help of Ava, a lone Pacific western bear living in the condemned forest. He makes a deal with Ava not to make any decisions for a month after promising to turn Archie into a real bear she will love. After assuring Archie that he will find a way to win Ava's heart, John attempts to win his wife Lisa back by dancing in their cabin, but his efforts are ruined when Lucky the dog accidentally ruins it. Eventually, Archie spends the day with Ava, whose relationship with Sonny is declining, and after a series of events, Archie wins Ava's heart and respect from other forest animals.
