El Bumbún

In a rural Argentine landscape ravaged by the strictures of military rule and economic hardship, a young girl is born to a struggling woodcutter who desperately longs for a son. To cope with her birth as his third daughter, Antonio forces the child to assume a boy's identity, a deception that sets in motion a struggle between conformity and self-discovery under the watchful eyes of Mercedes, who has lost all her daughters to better-off families, and the constant threats from her own desperate husband.
