In 1973 Uruguay, three Tupamaros members - José "Pepe" Mujica, Mauricio Rosencof and Eleuterio Fernández Huidobro - are held as hostages in a government-run prison, subjected to mental torment and physical abuse after the military dictatorship crushes their guerilla group. The men endure 12 years of isolation, relocation and psychological manipulation, with only brief moments of respite when they're reunited or have visitors from the outside world. Through their experiences, the film dramatises the lives of these three men, including Mujica's later rise as Uruguay's president, in a powerful portrayal of resistance and survival against overwhelming oppression.
