In 1932-1933, Owen Legate (Robert Redford), a representative of the railroad, arrives in Dodson, Mississippi to shut down the local railway and displace its residents. There, he unexpectedly finds love with Alva Starr (Natalie Wood), the flirtatious main attraction of the town. As Alva and Owen's romance blossoms, they face opposition from the townspeople, including J.J. Nichols (Charles Bronson). The story is inspired by Tennessee Williams' 1946 one-act play, which was previously performed on television and adapted for film with a new cast and script.
