Juana (Diana Elizabeth Torres), a single Mexican-American mother, stumbles upon a high-energy Japanese cuisine kitchen in Oakland, California, where she rekindles her passion for food and life. She navigates cultural clashes, competition, and sexism to pursue her dream of becoming a sushi chef, ultimately gaining respect and recognition from the very people who initially doubted her. With the support of her father and daughter, Juana finds success as a sushi chef, earning the respect of her former critics and even winning the admiration of Aki (Yutaka Takeuchi), a veteran Japanese chef.
