The film consists of a series of vignettes that are often narrated to provide further context. A man and woman sit on a park bench overlooking a nearby city with a flock of geese flying overhead; the woman comments that it is September. Jan-Eje Ferling plays "Man at the Stairs", who directly addresses the audience to share an encounter he had with his former classmate, Sverker Olsson, whom he wronged in the past. The vignettes showcase a kaleidoscope of human experiences, from mundane moments like a waiter overfilling a glass to more poignant encounters such as two parents leaving flowers on their son's grave, a captured soldier's desperate pleas, and a jealous husband's outburst.
