In 1375, China was in chaos between the Yuan Dynasty and Ming Dynasty. A Korean peace delegation, led by General Choi-Jung (Joo Jin-mo), travels to Ming China to meet the Hongwu Emperor but is arrested in retaliation for the death of a Chinese diplomat. They are put in chains and taken across a desert, where they face hostility from Mongol raiders. Yeo-sol (Jung Woo-sung), a former slave, defeats the Mongol general Rambulwha in single combat, but allows him to live. The Koreans, including Princess Bu-yong (Zhang Ziyi), flee with the princess, determined to return her safely to Nanjing and atone for their diplomatic failure.
