A retired American professor's quiet life in a luxurious palazzo in Rome is turned upside down when a vulgar Italian marchesa and her lover, along with their daughter and her fiancé, move into an apartment on the upper floor, forcing him to confront his solitude and the collision of old and new. As the Professor navigates this unexpected chaos, he finds himself drawn to the provocative past of Konrad, the marchesa's younger lover, who becomes a complex figure in his life before being brutally killed in a gas explosion. The film explores themes of existential crises, class differences, and the sociopolitical gap between generations, ultimately leading to a tragic confrontation with mortality.
