In this 1958 American musical supernatural sports romantic comedy film, George Abbott directs Stanley Donen from a screenplay by George Abbott, adapted from his and Douglass Wallop's book of the same title with music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross. The story centers on Joe Hardy (Tab Hunter), a middle-aged fan of the Washington Senators baseball team who makes a pact with the Devil to help his team win the league pennant, inspired by the Faust legend. With tremendous home runs and game-saving catches, Joe leads the Senators on a long winning streak into pennant contention, but also struggles to forget his wife Meg, played by Gwen Verdon, whom he's fallen in love with again after being transformed back into his old self.
