Jack Thornton's luck changes when he pays $250 for Buck, a savage St. Bernard dog, to keep him from being shot by an arrogant Englishman named Smith. With Buck by his side, Jack rescues a woman named Claire Blake from wolves and wins a bet that enables them to purchase the supplies they need. As they journey to the Yukon gold fields with Shorty Houlihan, a grizzled prospector who has spent time in jail for reading other people's mail, Jack and Claire begin to form a bond that will eventually blossom into love. Along the way, Buck helps his new owner win a crucial bet, enabling them to stake their claim on a rich gold strike.
