In 1870s New York, spinster heiress Catherine Sloper (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is courted by Morris Townsend, a handsome and charming young man who is clearly interested in her wealth, much to the chagrin of her overprotective father Dr. Austin Sloper (Albert Finney). As Catherine navigates her feelings for Morris, she must decide whether to spend her life alone or marry a man who sees her only as a potential inheritance. With the guidance of her aunt Lavinia Penniman (Maggie Smith), Catherine finds herself torn between her love for Morris and her desire for independence, leading to a complex exploration of class, identity, and the societal expectations placed upon women.
