In 1930s New York City, Sorrowful Jones, a down-on-his-luck bookmaker, finds himself unexpectedly saddled with the care of a six-year-old girl after her father leaves her as collateral for a bet. As he navigates his newfound responsibility and tries to pay off his debt, he finds an unlikely ally in Amanda Worthington, Blackie's girlfriend, who helps him see a side of life he never knew existed.
