Pinky Johnson, a light-skinned black woman played by Jeanne Crain, returns to her grandmother's house in the South after graduating from a Northern nursing school. She confides in her grandmother that she has been "passing" for white while at school and has fallen in love with a young white doctor, Dr. Thomas Adams. After being harassed by racist local law enforcement and encountering challenges in caring for a wealthy elderly woman, Miss Em, Pinky decides to establish a clinic and nursery school staffed by black nursing students on the property she inherited from Miss Em.
