Milo, a whimsical and emotionally impulsive 20-something living in Brooklyn, is in a phase of her life where everyone around her seems to be growing up except her. She meets Roger, an older gay man with a dry wit and a somewhat guarded personality, at a gay bar, and he shares his painful experiences trying to become a parent. Milo impulsively offers to be his surrogate and egg donor, driven by her need for connection and a deeper role in someone's life. As the pregnancy progresses, Milo becomes increasingly attached to Roger, but their bond is strained as she oversteps boundaries and becomes clingy. Eventually, things reach a breaking point, leading to a raw and emotional confrontation between Milo and Roger. Following this, Milo begins a slow journey toward self-awareness and starts to understand that her motivations were rooted in her own unresolved issues, not just compassion.
